The National Champinships were held at a wind plagued Nagambie Lakes Course in central Victoria in early March. As well as strong winds over the first four days in particular coaches and rowers had to contend with fine swirling dust which covered the boat park. With drought conditions continuing the dust was everywhere and combined with strong winds left many rowers and coaches with lingering chest infections. In 2006 Sydney Uni had a fantastic Nationals but lost our titles in the U23 Coxless Fours and the Eight. Not so in 2007- the suad led out with a wind by Ed Boyce and Richard Allsop in the pairs, a win by Boyce , Allsop, Mitch Estens and Terence Alfred in the coxless fours, a win in the coxed fouur and all four pairs combining to take out the U23 Eight making a clean sweep of these events for Sydney Uni.
In all Sydney Uni athletes achieved
9 Gold Medals
12 Silver medals
11 Bronze medals
A total of 32 medals at the 2007 Nationals.
15 other Sydney Uni crews made A Finals with 6 fourths, 5 fifths and 4 sixths.
Overall another extremely succesful event for Sydney Uni Rowing.
A notable feature of these championships was the assistance of a dedictaed group of parents. Led by Kerrie Allsop the group of Gail and David Anderson, Mike Allsop and Warwick Girdlestone worked tirelessly to cater for the entire men’s and women’s teams for meals and on course refreshments and food. Without doubt their assistance at both the State and National Championships paid a major part in the successes we have enjoyed this year. A big thanks you from the club to these parents and a note to all rowers and parents – we need new volunteers to take over for 2008 State and National Championships.
