Fergus Pragnell was accorded yet another honour last week when he was named Australian University Sport’s Male Athlete of the Year for 2004. Fergus attended the AUS Planning Conference in Brisbane where the award was presented on Thursday evening and by 11 am the next morning was back at the International Regatta Centre in Penrith rowing to another Inter Col victory in the Paul’s College Eight.
This award caps a great year for Fergus as he previously won the Sydney University Male Blue of the Year at the 2004 Blues Dinner.
Fergus with pair partner and Club Captain Ian Allsop was a member of the 2004 Australian U23 Coxed Four that won gold at the World U23’s. Soon after returning from that trip Fergus joined the SUBC Intervarsity Eight to win the coveted Oxford and Cambridge Cup at Lake Barrington in late September 04. In January 2005 Fergus was selected in the NSW Youth Olympics rowing team and at the 2005 State Championships was in the SUBC eight which won the men’s elite eight for the first time since 1975. Fergus continued his season with wins in the U23 Pair, Four and Eight at the 2005 Nationals and was selected again in the 2005 U23 Australain Team – this time in an eight which begins training next week.
Congratulations Fergus.
